Towards predicting noise-power-distance curves for propeller and rotor powered aircraft

Abstract: Propeller and rotor based propulsion systems are the dominating choice of power delivery system in the upcoming Urban Air Mobility market. Fully electric air-taxis (car sized vehicles with Vertical Take-off and Landing, VTOL, capabilities) concepts are using the benefits of the scalable properties of electric motors to distribute propulsor units all over the airframe. The large variety of concepts and configurations of these vehicles poses a serious issue in predicting noise generated on the ground. The need … Show more

“…On an aircraft level, assessment of individual noise source directivity effects on noise contours, allows the exploration of engine installation, reflection and blockage effects to maximise the potential benefits on noise exposure. The incorporation of directivity effects may then be coupled with models for generating NPD curves for novel aircraft [32,33] that would provide the necessary PWL inputs for RANE v2, to provide global assessment of the noise impact of new technology and/or implementation of noise abatement operational procedures.…”

“…Previously mentioned airport noise tools may then be used to assess the noise on the ground due to UAV single operation or even fleet operation over the duration of a full day for example. In combination with the capabilities of generating NPDs for propeller power air vehicles [3], and the airport noise tool RANE v2 [4], the global assessment of noise exposure of such UAV networks.…”

“…Although reference data for full scale transport aircraft is publicly available through databases such as the Aircraft Noise and Performance (ANP) database [5], NPD data for small scale drones is either scarce or nonexistent. Previously developed frameworks [6], [3] that predict the noise of novel aircraft as functions of changes in aircraft design technology and/or operations require knowledge of baseline noise data for a reference aircraft of similar performance and scale. Overturning the lack of this data is the major contribution of this ongoing research.…”
