Towards Robust, Authoritative Assessments of Environmental Impacts Embodied in Trade: Current State and Recommendations

Abstract: SummaryGlobal multiregional input-output databases (GMRIOs) became the standard tool for tracking environmental impacts through global supply chains. To date, several GMRIOs are available, but the numerical results differ. This paper considers how GMRIOs can be made more robust and authoritative. We show that GMRIOs need detail in environmentally relevant sectors. On the basis of a review of earlier work, we conclude that the highest uncertainty in footprint analyses is caused by the environmental data used in… Show more

“…EXIOBASE 3 tables are, however, not in absolute compliance with national MSUT data since the time series was constructed by superimposing structural change data from national statistical agencies onto available EXIOBASE tables from 2007 (version 2). If such adherence with official MSUT data is required, EXIOBASE 3 can be used as a background system within a "single country national account consistent" approach (Edens et al 2015), as discussed in another paper of this special issue (Tukker et al 2018).…”

“…More work needs to be done in this area, but at the same time, the institutionalization of MRIO and footprint‐based approaches in, for example, the OECD (Yamano ), will allow for the research frontier to move in this direction (Tukker et al. ).…”

“…Hence, acceptance of such science‐led GMRIOs in the statistical community is not as good as it ideally would be. As described in more detail in the contribution of Tukker and colleagues (), the acceptance gap can be overcome by the following. Harmonized extensions could be created.…”

“…The last paper in this special issue (Tukker et al. ) uses such information and the insights obtained in this special issue to propose a strategy for creating a robust, credible GMRIO for footprint analysis. More specifically, the work done for this special issue sets out to move the state of the art on the topics above in the following ways.…”
