Towards the Definition of Workflows for Automation in HBIM Generation

Abstract: In the last years creation of as-built Building Information Modelling (BIM), and Historic Building Information Modelling (HBIM) in particular, has become a widely researched topic. In particular, the so-called "Scan.-to-BIM" procedure has received a lot of attention. This is mainly given by the fact that nowadays, terrestrial laser scanning (TLS), either static and mobile, and 3D photogrammetry are quite popular techniques to acquire building geometry raw data. However, turning a set of scans into a BIM model … Show more

“…They propose a workflow to maintain a very high Level of Accuracy using NURBS-based modeling in Rhino3D to generate objects that could be recognized as walls and ceilings and enriched with semantic data for representing ruined heritage. For Previtali and Banfi, 25 the main gap in HBIM is the labor-intensiveness of converting raw point cloud data, obtained through 3D laser scanning and photogrammetry, to BIM models. They propose an add-in software for Revit that segments point clouds and converts them to geometric primitives and NURBS surfaces while generating documentation for the geometric entities.…”

“…To deal with this gap, one of the following paths must be taken: 1) combining several programs and file formats in the workflow, resulting in models that are difficult to update and maintain; or 2) oversimplifying the geometry and, thus, sacrificing the model's accuracy as well as its usability for simulation purposes. 8,13,19,[23][24][25][29][30][31] Thus, more research is needed to seamlessly insert NURBS modeling in HBIM workflows to accurately represent complex geometry.…”
