Toxicity of heavy metals to Asellus aquaticus (L.) (Crustacea, Isopoda)

Abstract: Effects of heavy metals on the isopod Asellus aquaticus (L.) are studied by static toxicity tests. Results demonstrate that the species is sensitive to Cd + 2, Cr + 6, Cu + 2, Fe + 3, Hg + 2, Ni + 2, Pb + 2 and Zn + 2, but the toxicity of each metal is different. Differences are also found between adults and between adults and juveniles. The comparative analysis of all data on the toxicity has been performed on the concentrations of metal ions and not on metal compound concentrations.Criteria for establishing … Show more

“…Toxicology and Industrial Health 26 (4) inhabit (Migliore and De Nicola Giudici, 1990). Furthermore, the presence of some toxic compounds can be found in their tissues long after exposure, thus outside influences can be monitored and spotted after incidents (Plenet, 1995;Van Gestel and Brummelen, 1996).…”

“…Heavy metals were chosen as suitable pollutants because they are widespread environmental contaminants, from either natural or anthropogenic sources, and are widely believed to be a threat to the health and survival of many marine or aquatic animals, including crustaceans (Ahsanullah et al, 1981;Migliore & de Nicola Giudici, 1990). However, there are conflicting reports on their e#ects on haemocyte number in crustaceans.…”
