“…Since the early work of Stewart andHolmes (1953) andHemingway (1961;1962) on the effects offertilizers on herbage mineral composition, research has shown that reseeding and liming of upland pasture can result in mineral imbalance leading to potential Cu deficiency (Whitelaw et al, 1979), while increasing the nitrogen (N) supply on lowland Lolium perenne swards has been shown to result in changes in the ratios of N/S and of K; (Ca + Mg) (Whitehead et al, 1978). Mudd (1970) concluded that nitrogen fertilizer depressed herbage Mn and I, increased herbage Cu and Zn but had no effect on Co content. However, the consequences of intensification of the management of permanent grassland on herbage mineral status are less well understood, in particular the relative effects of reseeding and of increasing fertilizer N application on the concentration of various minerals.…”
