Tracers for metabolic imaging of brain and heart

Abstract: Major tracers for probing regional metabolism and neuroreceptor binding in brain and heart with positron emission tomography (PET) and single photon emission tomography (SPET) are critically reviewed with special emphasis on radiochemical, kinetic and radiopharmacological aspects.

“…To this end radioisotopes are commonly used tools, yielding quantitative measures of the organ distribution of a drug (Antar, 1990;Kung, 1990; Stocklin, 1992). Noninvasive imaging permits the time sequence monitoring of the distribution of a drug (Antar, 1990;Kung, 1990;Reba, 1993;Stocklin, 1992). However, radio nuclear images may suffer from limited spatial resolution, making it difficult to apply to laboratory animal models such as mice.…”

“…It has been difficult to apply PET and SPET techniques to the study of 5-HT receptor systems in schizophrenia, due to the lack of selective 5-HT radioligands (Stocklin, 1992). PET studies have attempted to assess S-HT2A binding in schizophrenic subjects using the non-selective D2/5-HT2A receptor ligand 11C-N-methyl-spiperone (11C-NMSP) (Farde et al, 1994(Farde et al, , 1995.…”

“…Besides FDG, there have been many advances in developing new class of radiotracers to diagnose cancer and to interrogate certain neurological processes. O-15 water (blood flow), 2 F-18 labeled fatty acids (fatty acid/thiokinase metabolism), 3 F-18 FLT (thymidine kinase), 4 F-18 fluoroestradiol (estrogen receptor targeting),…”
