“…However, after day 18 the accuracy was 98 per cent for the pregnant sows and 87 per cent for the non‐pregnant sows. The data are in agreement with previous studies that reported that between 92 and 94 per cent of sows can be correctly diagnosed as pregnant and that between 52 and 76 per cent can be correctly diagnosed as non‐pregnant (Martinat‐Bottè and others 1988, Martinez and others 1992, Szenci and others 1992, 1993, 1997, Meinhardt and others 1995, Quesnel and others 1996). “…B‐mode ultrasound is one of the more practical tests of pregnancy in pigs. Taverne and others (1985), Jackson (1986), Botero and others (1986), Martinat‐Bottè and others (1988), Martinez and others (1992), Meinhardt and others (1995), Szenci and others (1992, 1993, 1997) and Quesnel and others (1996) used scanners with transducers of between 3·5 and 5 MHz to diagnose pregnancy in sows from day 18 after insemination. The accuracy of pregnancy diagnosis before day 18 has not been determined.…”
