Tracking Progress Toward the 2010 Biodiversity Target and Beyond

Abstract: provide a means to enhance the quality and timeliness of the inter actions between scientists and policy-makers at national scales and above. The GLOBE International Commission on Land Use Change and Ecosystems, made up of senior legislators from the G8+5 and several developing countries, provides another opportunity to bring policy-makers and scientists together. Similar initiatives will also be needed at the subnational scale. The United Nations will convene a summit in 2010 to consider the second 5-year revi… Show more

“…Global assessments of the distributions and changes in biodiversity in spatial and temporal contexts have played a crucial role in efficiently allocating limited resources to high-priority areas and species [1][2][3][4][5]. However, the limited amount of available information poses one of the toughest challenges for such global efforts [6,7]. For example, 18 per cent of animal species that have been evaluated to date by the IUCN have been categorized as datadeficient, because the information available for the assessment of population status is so limited [1].…”

“…Quantitative measurement was defined as the numerical measurement of the parameters implicated in the effect or mechanism categories; purely anecdotal reports, presence-absence reports, and species lists were not included as quantitative measures. Time series was defined as the use of data collected either before and after tilapia introduction, or collected at least three data points across 10 years post tilapia introduction (Walpole et al, 2009). Replication was defined as the presence of at least two replicates (i.e., n 2) for at least one tilapia introduction treatment or where the populations of introduced tilapia can be reasonably considered to be distinct from other populations.…”
