Trade, Non-Scale Growth and Uneven Development

Abstract: This paper investigates the relationship between trade and economic development using a two-country, non-scale growth model. Depending on the share of the expenditure for manufactured goods, we obtain two different results with regard to long-run production patterns. Whether or not the follower country can catch up with the leader country in the long run depends on two factors: (1) the patterns of production in both countries and (2) the measure of economic welfare that is used, i.e. per capita income or per c… Show more

“…Moreover, if both countries have the same positive population growth rate, we can investigate the transitional dynamics in detail by using phase diagrams. For this, see Sasaki (2011a). 13) The author is indebted to Takumi Naito for pointing out these other trade patterns.…”

“…However, both these authors use scale growth models, which are subject to the aforementioned problems that make them somewhat counterfactual. By contrast, Sasaki (2011aSasaki ( , 2012 investigates the relationship between trade patterns and growth rates by using nonscale growth models. In particular, the model presented in Sasaki (2011a) examines the longrun trade pattern when both countries' population growth rates are equal.…”
