Traditional knowledge applied to hunting and breeding of the vulnerable Yellow-footed Tortoise (Chelonoidis denticulatus) in the Cazumbá-Iracema Extractive Reserve, Acre, Brazil

Abstract: Hunting is intensely practiced in the Amazon and is related to the survival of riverside communities as a source of income and food. This study was conducted at Resex Cazumbá-Iracema between June and November, in the dry season and the beginning of the flood period. Twenty-one families were monitored, six hunting events were followed, and 23 C. denticulatus individuals were recorded, all of which were categorized as opportunistic. Among the studied individuals, 11 were males and 12 females, and those with a ca… Show more

“…Recording bait from hunters' knowledge is an important tool for providing data that could fill the gap in the feeding ecology of hunted species [ 11 ] and assessing the impact of hunting and exploitation of environments [ 23 ]. The tucumã, baginha, babaçu and buriti stood out as the plant species most used as baits for different game species.…”

“…It may involve the use of lures in different hunting and attraction contexts [ 5 , 6 ], types of environments [ 7 , 8 ], and different techniques [ 9 , 10 ]. This includes both active and passive hunting techniques [ 6 , 11 ], which can be performed individually or in groups, depending on the species intended to be captured [ 11 15 ]. All these factors are taken into consideration by hunters in decision-making regarding the hunting strategy to be employed [ 16 ].…”

“…Interestingly, although amphibians and reptiles are the taxa with the fewest species mentioned, they include three of the species with the highest use consensus. In the case of reptiles, fats are usually the main extracted medicinal product in South America (COSTA NETO, 1999;MOURA and MARQUES, 2008;HANAZAKI et al, 2009;CUNHA RIBEIRO et al, 2010;ALVARES OLIVEIRA et al, 2021;ALVARES OLIVEIRA et al, 2022). Hanazaki et al (2009) state that the use of fats for medicinal purposes was originated in Europe, which would explain its persistence in populations of mestizo origin such as the one studied.…”

“…For instance, in the Neotropics hunters employ firearms, traps, bladed weapons, and dogs, in different variations and combinations (Alves et al 2009;Bezerra et al 2012;. ; Santos-Fita et al 2012), and the decision on which to use depends on the type of environment, available technologies and target species Tavares et al 2020;Oliveira et al 2022a;Oliveira et al 2022b). Another way of acquiring wild-sourced protein is through purchase at open fairs, local markets or gain ( van Vliet et al 2014van Vliet et al , 2015Chaves et al 2017;Souto et al 2019;El Bizri et al 2020).…”
