Transcatheter arterial embolization for treatment of hepatocellular carcinoma in a cat

Abstract: Findings suggested that transcatheter arterial embolization may be suitable for treating hepatic tumors in cats, but alternative approaches are needed in cats, compared with dogs, owing to anatomic differences.

“…The cat's condition stabilized, and the tumor size was reduced, and surgical resection to prevent rebleeding was possible with good general condition. Arterial embolization procedures are now performed in veterinary practice for liver tumors that cannot be surgically removed, with the aim of palliative mass reduction (7)(8)(9). Arterial embolization combined with arterial infusion chemotherapy is commonly performed for the same purpose in our hospital.…”

“…A previous study reported complications of TAE in a cat owing to the sharp angle between the aorta and celiac artery in cats (9). They used a carotid artery approach to prevent this complication.…”

“…TAE is an important component of the treatment of unresectable hepatocellular masses and is one of the standard therapies 6,8,14,15 . However, in veterinary medicine, studies on TAE consist mainly of case reports with few comprehensive studies, leading to an inability to assess the effectiveness of this intervention in veterinary patients 16–19 …”

“…Notably, TAE improves pain and local control and prolongs survival rates in patients with unresectable HCC (Savastano et al 1993, Rand et al 2005. This method has recently been used in veterinary medicine (Weisse et al 2002, Cave et al 2003, Iwai et al 2015, although little practical information is available. Here, we report tumour responses, clinical reactions and adverse effects after selective embolisation of the tumour-supplying arteries using gelatine sponge particles (GSPs) in four dogs with HCC.…”
