Transcending Temptation Through Abstraction

Abstract: Many goals that people pursue are distal in that they cannot be attained in the here and now but rather must be achieved through action across varied social contexts over time. Self-control requires people to make decisions consistent with distal goals when tempted by more immediate rewards. Inspired by construal-level theory, we propose and review evidence that the way in which people subjectively represent, or construe, events systematically influences these decisions. We suggest that high-level construal (t… Show more

“…"; Fujita, 2011). Shifting to more abstract, higher level construals of the situation can tip the balance in favor of longer term goals because such representations facilitate extraction of goal-relevant features, whereas lower level construals accentuate proximal temptations (Fujita & Carnevale, 2012).…”

“…Indeed, Studies 2 and 5 suggest that high verticality might enable people to delay short-term gains for larger long-term gains. Perhaps through the mechanisms outlined in control models like the reflective-impulsive model, abstract construals evoked by high verticality can enable greater self-control (see also Fujita & Carnevale, 2012).…”

“…A key strategy is integrating the role of construal in resolving self-control conflicts (Fujita & Carnevale, 2012;Metcalfe & Mischel, 1999). The term 'construal' refers to people's subjective understanding of a given event.…”

“…By contrast, construing the same cake as 'a fattening indulgence' should reduce those impulses and motivate restraint. Research suggests that construals of temptations that focus on their concrete consumatory features promote self-control failure, whereas construals that focus on more abstract goal-and value-relevant features promotes self-control success (Fujita & Carnevale, 2012;Metcalfe & Mischel, 1999).…”
