“…In the Halbert et al (1990a) study, complete cervical penetration was achieved in 49 of 90 ewes (54%) and 40 of the 49 ewes (82%) lambed. In the much larger Buckrell et al (1994) study, the corresponding percentages for 2060 ewes were 88% and 33%, with significant effects of the time of year (breeding v. non-breeding season) and interval from previous lambing, Table 1, on lambing outcome. Complete penetration rates increased from 76% for the first 500 ewes inseminated in the study to 98% for the last 500 and the corresponding mean times to achieve complete penetration decreased from 8.6 to 3.6 min, reflecting the importance of operator experience.…”
