Transcriptome Comparison Analysis of Ostrinia furnacalis in Four Developmental Stages

Abstract: The Asian corn borer, Ostrinia furnacalis, is one of the most destructive pests of maize and causes huge losses in maize yield each year. In order to characterize the different developmental stages, a high-throughput sequencing platform was employed to perform de novo transcriptome assembly and gene expression analysis for the egg, larva, pupa and adult stages. Approximately 185 million reads were obtained, trimmed, and assembled into 42,638 unigenes with an average length of 801.94 bp and an N50 length of 1,1… Show more

“…In this study, ACB-AhR and ACB-BtS were sequenced for the transcriptomics and proteomics analyses, and we obtained a total of 73,229 genes with an average length of 844 bp from the transcriptome analysis. The average length of the genes was longer than those observed in ACB (Xu et al, 2015; Zhang et al, 2016; Cui et al, 2017), and Plutella xylostella (Lin et al, 2013). The genes length may be correlated to sequence techniques and the application of assembly tools.…”

“…Ostrinia furnacalis is a major insect pest of maize, and usually causes most damage to leaves at the mid-whorl stage (Zhang et al, 2016). Current knowledge of induced defences in maize in response to O. furnacalis attack remains limited.…”

“…The majority of insects (e.g., Lepidoptera, Hymenoptera, Diptera, Coleoptera 3 ) undergo complete metamorphosis (i.e., are holometabolous) and have four differentiated life stages: egg, larva, pupa, and adult. These changes are also accompanied by changes in gene expression 4 - 7 . These previous studies have primarily focused on non-social or eusocial insects; little is known about changes in transcripts during development of subsocial insects, which form small groups consisting of mother and/or father and offspring with the parents providing parental care.…”
