The influence of different niult~iplicities of infection on the formation of infectious and transducing n,-phages was studied. The ratio of the two types of n,-phages formed is not the same. An agent is described which killed P . mirabilis bacteria without forming plaques. The synthesis of this agent is correlated with the formation of transducing phages, but not that of infectious phages. The possible identity of this agent with phage structures able to kill bacteria without plaque formation is discussed.
