“…22 The overall sensitivity for vegetations, however, is Ͻ60%. [22][23][24] Vegetations Ͼ2 mm in diameter, 25 particularly those on the right-sided valves (which lie closer to the chest wall), are readily detected by TTE. TTE views may be inadequate in up to 20% of adult patients because of obesity, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, or chest-wall deformities.…”

“…In patients suspected of having IE, TTE alone cannot exclude several important aspects of IE, including infection on prosthetic valves, periannular abscess, leaflet perforation, and fistulae. 24,26 In patients in whom IE or its complications are strongly suspected (Table 4) (for example, patients with prosthetic valves, community-acquired staphylococcal bacteremia, or new atrioventricular block), a negative TTE of even the highest quality will not definitely rule out IE. Moreover, a positive TTE in such patients may demonstrate vegetations but will not suffice to rule out the important complications.…”

“…[4][5][6] The sensitivity of TTE varies from 40-63%, and for TEE between 90-100%, while the specificity for both is greater than 95%. [14][15][16] The diagnostic yield of echocardiography reported by Chaudhury et al (64%) was lower, probably due to lack of TEE at that time. 6 The culture positivity of 83.8% of IE in our study is higher than that reported by Math (41%), Chaudhury et al (47%) and Garg et al (67.6%).…”

“…The presence and characteristics of vegetations were evaluated according to transesophageal echocardiography. Valvular vegetation was defined as an oscillating or fixed mass associated with a valve or its supporting apparatus, distinct in echogenic structure, and with motion independent from the remainder of the involved leaflet [12]. The lesion had to be detectable throughout the complete cardiac cycle.…”
