“…The fieldwork for this study used an ANT-inspired ethnographic approach (Kärrholm, 2007; Sharif, 2019; Yaneva, 2013) and was completed between October 2017 and February 2019. ANT-inspired ethnography seeks to follow the actors and relations, unpacking their traces and effects (Kärrholm, 2007; Sharif, 2019; Yaneva, 2013).…”

ANT-inspired ethnography seeks to follow the actors and relations, unpacking their traces and effects (Kärrholm, 2007; Sharif, 2019; Yaneva, 2013). It is described by Fenwick et al (2015, p. 122) as choosing “a site and just sit in it for a while or wander about in it, watching, listening, thinking, perhaps talking with people in the site until something of interest emerges.” Tracers, according to Fenwick et al (2015, p. 122), refer to “an object (tool, idea, text, etc.)…”

“…Beyond perceptions, functions and systematic investigations, the present study's approach was mainly inspired by the works of researchers such as Latour and Yaneva (2008) and Yaneva (2013), to closely engage with the activities, relations and their change over time. This involved observing and developing sensitivity and receptivity towards everything and everyone which/who could Activity networks in urban spaces demystify the complexity of any performed activity (Sharif, 2016(Sharif, , 2019Yaneva, 2013) that was produced/reproduced every minute or even every second. Focusing on the temporal and continuous occurrence of activities facilitated the comprehension of multiple realities (Massey, 2005) within the site, which could be mapped and visualised to grasp the relationships of the heterogeneous actors involved in the controversy (Yaneva, 2012).…”

“…Masdar City is the first sustainable city in the Middle East and was designed by Foster + Partners in the UK (Khalifa-University, 2018). ANT-inspired ethnography diverges from traditional ethnography by calling for an in-depth investigation of the socio-technical dynamics of humans and the built environment (Sharif, 2019; Yaneva, 2003). This approach enriches ethnographic studies of design (scripts) and use (Kärrholm, 2012; Yaneva, 2009b, 2017) by encouraging researchers to trace relations and describe translations wherever they may lead.…”
