Transformation from IT-based knowledge management into BIM-supported knowledge management: A literature review

Abstract: Highlights  The construction industry is knowledge intensive and relies on effective KM.  There are various weaknesses within existing IT-based KM tools or systems.  BIM has distinctive features to support KM in construction projects.  BIM-supported KM is advantageous over IT-based KM.  BIM-supported KM is just emerging and therefore needs future development.

“…The review papers were summarized according to the phases of building projects. For example, several review papers generally analyzed the value of BIM in building projects across various aspects (Volk et al 2014, Zou et al 2017, and others reviewed BIM applications in different phases of building projects including building design (Wong and Fan 2013, Soust-Verdaguer et al 2017, Chang and Hsieh 2020, construction (Oraee et al 2017, Santos et al 2019, Wang and Meng 2019, and operation phases (Soust-Verdaguer et al 2017, Dixit et al 2019. Table 2 shows an overview of the summarized review papers with different foci.…”

“…These data resources provide an opportunity to increase or improve performance of FM activities [24]. However, data (raw numbers and symbols), which need to be converted into knowledge to take action in the building environment, cannot be used in FM because of some hindrance factors [40]. For example, Srivastava et al [25] stated that the managers, who are responsible for energy management, have a lack of energy background.…”

“…Thus, IT integrated KM elements into the information infrastructure of companies, supporting all business processes and changing the organization of work in the company as a whole (Paschek et al, 2019). An example is the use of Building Information Modeling (BIM) technologies that provide parametric modeling, virtual visualization and a centralized platform (Wang & Meng, 2019). IT has also improved KM methodologies and tools.…”
