“…Although there are some examples of long-20 distance livestock movements during the Early Middle Ages, the long distance movement of herds was definitively established during the 12th and 13th centuries, as in other Iberian mountains, e.g. the Gredos Sierra in the Central Range (López-Sáez et al, 2014, 2018 and the western Cantabrian Mountains (Fernández Mier et al, 2013;Fernández Mier and Tente, 2018).…”

“…The term "transterminance", or "valley transhumance" (Fernández Mier et al, 2013), refers to local livestock movements within a mountain, in which there is no exploitation of grasslands outside the mountain. In this case, livestock remains in the valley bottom around villages and hamlets during the cold season and moves about 10 to 25 km to the high mountain region during summer, so that all management occurs within the same mountain (Fernández Mier and Tente, 2018;Fernández Lozano and Cabero Diéguez, 2017). Antolín et al (2018) noted there is confusion in use of the terms "transhumance" and "transterminance" because the literature does not provide clear definitions and because there are multiple interpretations of transhumance (Costello and Svensson, 2018).…”

“…This has implications both for the methods and policies used to protect them and for our understanding of their historical survival and expansion. Although several recent studies have explored the possibilities for reintroducing (pre)historic management practices such as heathland farming and burning (Jansen & Diemont, 2005 ; Mier & Tente, 2018 ; Woestenburg, 2018 ), there is yet no consistent knowledge about how human management practices translate into heathlands with different turnover rates.…”

“…Some huts built in perishable materials were identified, as well as the remains of a wall and a collapsed palisade. Given its location on a high mountain plateau, Soida probably specialized in the seasonal mountain grazing of sheep and goats (Fernández-Mier and Tente 2018;Tente and Fernández-Mier 2021).…”

“…These sites share some common features such as the position in discreet spots in the landscape, but normally near a small valley, the use of perishable materials to build domestic units and palisades; the pottery ware and the use of a wall/palisade to surround the settlement. At all the sites, a fire was identified and dated around the second half of the 10th century and the beginning of the following (Tente and Carvalho 2011;Tente 2018). With the exception of Senhora do Barrocal, most of the sites possess a single occupation level, which was destroyed by the fire that allowed the preservation of plant remains, which are presented and discussed below.…”
