Transient behavior representation, contribution to fault current assessment, and transient response improvement in DFIG-based wind turbines assisted with crowbar hardware

Abstract: Summary This paper analytically deals with the transient behavior evaluation and crowbar hardware design for the low voltage ride‐through (LVRT) capability enhancement in doubly fed induction generator (DFIG)‐based wind turbines (WTs). The paper indeed answers the following question analytically. “What are the main criteria for choosing the crowbar resistance?” It is shown that the value of the crowbar resistance affects both the peak values and oscillations of the DFIG transient response. Therefore, the paper… Show more

“…The model of DFIG in synchronous Park reference frame can be expressed as follows: {Vsdq=sdqdt+Rsisdqtrue+¯ωsφsqdVrdq=rdqdt+Rrirdqtrue+¯ωrφrqd, in which: ωr=ωsωm {φsdq=Lsisdq+normalMirdqφrdq=Lrirdq+normalMisdq. To control the DC‐bus voltage and stator frequency, we choose field‐oriented control (FOC). In the FOC strategy, the stator flux coincides with the d‐axis (Figure ).…”

“…In the literature (Sulla, et al, 2011;Zhai, et al, 2013;Wang et al, 2015;Fu et al, 2017;Rahimi and Azizi, 2019), the flux linkage of the stator was solved simply after the faults at different positions, and in this paper the calculation formula of the DFIG short-circuit current was given under different drop degrees of the terminal voltage, further. However, this method does not take into account rotor current dynamic process effects.…”

“…The external retrofit solution involves protection circuits, storage devices, and reactive injection devices, including flexible AC transmission controllers (FACTS) [5]. Several external protection circuit based solutions have been reported in the literature, among which crowbar protection is the foremost technique for improving the FRT capabilities [6], [7]. An approach that combines a crowbar and chopper circuit has also been reported in the literature [8].…”
