Transition metal‐catalyzed oxidative transformations of methylarenes

Abstract: Oxidation is one of the fundamental transformations in organic synthesis. The selective oxidation of inert substrates is interesting and important. In this review, the transition metal-catalyzed oxidation of methylarenes is discussed. Benzaldehyde, benzoic acid, benzyl alcohol, etc., were produced as the target products.

“…In oxidative procedures, the oxidation of toluene derivatives to give the corresponding benzoyl derivatives is an interesting and direct pathway 44. Hence, toluene derivatives were tested, and successfully realized, in the acylation of arenes, as reported in 2012 by Patel and co‐workers 45.…”

“…In oxidative procedures, the oxidation of toluened erivatives to give the corresponding benzoyl derivatives is an interesting and direct pathway. [44] Hence, toluene derivatives were tested, and successfully realized, in the acylation of arenes, as reported in 2012 by Patel and co-workers. [45] By using palladium as the catalystand TBHP as oxidant, various arenes were readily transformed and gave the corresponding ketones in good yields (Scheme 25).…”

“…Toluene is an important aromatic hydrocarbon that is widely used as an industrial feedstock and as a solvent. The selective oxidation of toluene can give synthetically important benzaldehyde, benzoic acid, benzyl alcohol and other compounds as products . In 2014, we developed an interesting oxidative procedure for the synthesis of benzamides from toluenes .…”
