Transition Metal Complexes as Catalysts for the Homo- and Copolymerisation of Olefins and Non-Conjugated Dienes

Until now natural fatty acid esters with their internal CC‐bonds cannot be used as substrates for catalytic polymerization reactions. It is always necessary to convert them to terminal unsaturated fatty acid esters first. Therefore, we now developed a two‐catalyst system consisting of an isomerization catalyst and a Brookhart polymerization catalyst. With this system of isomerizing copolymerization (IsoCoP) it is possible to copolymerize high oleic plant oils or fatty acid methyl esters with ethylene in a one‐pot reaction. The resulting polymers have molecular weights above 30 kDa and can contain more than 20 weight percent plant oils. The copolymers of fatty acid methyl esters are soluble in organic solvents. The predominant part of the copolymers from plant oils is usually soluble. The insoluble fraction is soluble after hydrolysis indicating a rare cross‐linking of polyolefin chains by triglycerol units. The catalytic system is effective yielding polymers with a productivity of up to 100 kg polymer per mole catalyst and pretty robust. Plants oils need to be purified only by a simple filtration over alumina before copolymerization. Practical Application: The possibility to copolymerize plant oils with ethylene leads to a new class of polymers and may enhance the usage of plant oils for plastics greatly. The new polymers might be used, e.g., for tackifiers or primers. High oleic plant oils as well as unsaturated fatty acid methyl esters can be directly copolymerized with ethylene by a combination of an isomerization catalyst with a Brookhart polymerization catalyst.

The grafting of phenol groups on ethylene/5,7‐dimethylocta‐1,6‐diene copolymers and on ethylene/propylene/5,7‐dimethylocta‐1,6‐diene terpolymers was performed, using two different modification procedures. An indirect route involving hydrochlorination followed by phenol insertion was found to be very effective for the terpolymers, and lead to a grafting phenol rate higher than 75%. However, if the phenol grafting is performed directly on a non‐modified terpolymer, lower rates are obtained. When applied to the copolymers the procedures used were revealed to be less efficient. This fact might be related to the lower solubility of the ethylene/5,7‐dimethylocta‐1,6‐diene copolymers (related to a higher crystallinity and a smaller diene content) when compared with the corresponding terpolymers. Although incomplete, the addition of a hindered phenol to the copolymer gave rise to a polymer that, when compared to polyethylene, presents a higher thermal‐oxidative stability.

The catalyst [Me2C(Flu)(3‐MeCp)ZrCl2] (1), activated by MAO, was used for the copolymerization of ethylene and 1,7‐octadiene (OD) to form copolymers with pendent double bonds. The properties of the copolymers were strongly dependent on the purity of the comonomer. Formation of ethylene‐rich sequences and increased levels of crosslinking were observed with highly purified 1,7‐octadiene. Catalysts 1 and [Me2Si(Flu)2ZrCl2] (2), activated by MAO, were used for the copolymerization of ethylene and 7‐methyl‐1,6‐octadiene (MOD). In both cases, alternating copolymers were formed with unreacted pendent double bonds. The triad distributions were analyzed by Markovian first‐ and second‐order statistics. Copolymers produced by catalyst 2 were significantly more alternating than copolymers produced by catalyst 1 despite the fact that catalyst 2 is highly symmetrical. Epoxidation of pendent double bonds was examined.
