Translating evolving technology use into user stories: Technology life narratives of consumer technology use

Abstract: People acquire and buy technology in stores or online in the same way as any other consumer product, so understanding the user as a consumer of technology is essential. In this study, we investigate how the use of ubiquitous consumer technology evolves over time and suggest a theoretical account of how use evolves into different patterns of embodiment. Empirically, we followed 15 consumers of smartphones during a 6‐month field study and collected data via interviews, survey, and focus groups. Analytically, we … Show more

“…For example, inspired by the study by Bødker, Gimpel, and Hedman (), we suggest studying exergames by applying the time‐in/out concept to investigate how exergames are used in daily life and how the socio‐material relationship evolves over time. Another future IS research direction could be to investigate the evolving exergame use through technology life narratives, as exemplified by Hedman, Bødker, Gimpel, and Damsgaard (). Drawing from our present findings, future research could focus on investigating how to deliberately create critical incidents that positively influence use continuance.…”

“…Although few of the reviewed studies used qualitative research methods alone (Hallem & Barth, 2011;Hedman & Gimpel, 2010;Misilei & Liew, 2018;Pope, 2001;Rodrigo & Turnbull, 2019;Voropai et al, 2019;Wei, Lu, et al, 2017) or mixed research (Hedman et al, 2019;Mäntymäki & Salo, 2015;Stafford, 1994;Talwar et al, 2020), qualitative methodology can be useful for investigating new ideas and insights, developing new theory, and providing explanatory power to research (Croker, 2009). In addition, postmodernist approach is evaluated under the umbrella of this research type (Croker, 2009); hence, postmodern consumer behaviours require this research, which contributes to the understanding of complex behaviours where contrasts are in harmony.…”

“…Additional values are suggested for the TCV for reinforcement of its explanation power based on product nature. Hedman et al (2019) proposed an additional value, expositional value, to further contribute to the TCV as a research tool in technology usage. Expositional value, as the sixth value, which is deprived of longitudinal field research, refers to the need of users to keep consciousness focused and diminish boredom.…”

“…Commensurate with the interpretative tradition, narrative research advocates pluralism, relativism and subjectivity and is often used as a means of understanding human experience (Connelly & Clandinin, 1990). In the IS literature, Hedman et al (2019) support the use of a narrative form as 'an attempt to contextualise and order the multi-layered reality of people's experiences ' (p. 5). In this study, a narrative refers to a person's life history or a story about a significant aspect of their life that shapes their IT professional experiences (Myers, 2010;Riessman, 2008).…”
