Translation of the Neck Disability Index and validation of the Greek version in a sample of neck pain patients

Abstract: Background: Neck pain is a highly prevalent condition resulting in major disability. Standard scales for measuring disability in patients with neck pain have a pivotal role in research and clinical settings. The Neck Disability Index (NDI) is a valid and reliable tool, designed to measure disability in activities of daily living due to neck pain. The purpose of our study was the translation and validation of the NDI in a Greek primary care population with neck complaints.

“…In the 2002 study by Wlodyka-Demaille et al , 18 more than 5% of French patients did not answer the driving item were extracted for the NPDS-TH, which accounted for 70% of the total variance. The three factors were identifi ed as disability (factor 1, items 8-15), pain (factor 2, items 1-7) and neck specifi c function (factor 3, items [16][17][18][19]. One item (item 20) of the NPDS-TH failed to load into the factor solutions.…”

“…5,12,14,18,20,21,22,24,26 Hains et al 8 reported that item order did not affect the responses. The internal consistency has been reported in 7 additional studies, with Cronbach α values ranging from .74 to .93.…”

“…The internal consistency has been reported in 7 additional studies, with Cronbach α values ranging from .74 to .93. 5,14,18,20,22,24,26 Four studies have calculated the factor structure of the NDI, 8,14,18,26 with 3 agreeing that only 1 factor-physical disability-is present. The reliability, internal consistency, and factor structure of the NDI are now considered to be well described in the literature and to be of very high quality.…”
