Translational Utility of Liquid Biopsies in Thyroid Cancer Management

Abstract: Liquid biopsies are a novel technique to assess for either circulating tumor cells (CTC) or circulating tumor DNA (ctDNA and microRNA (miRNA)) in peripheral blood samples of cancer patients. The diagnostic role of liquid biopsy in oncology has expanded in recent years, particularly in lung, colorectal and breast cancer. In thyroid cancer, the role of liquid biopsy in either diagnosis or prognosis is beginning to translate from the lab to the clinic. In this review, we describe the evolution of liquid biopsies … Show more

“…In addition, Tg has limited clinical value in postoperative TC follow-up for poorly differentiated thyroid cancer [ 151 ]. CT levels can be affected by other diseases such as chronic renal failure and parathyroid disease [ 152 ]. Imaging examinations may have adverse effects on the human body due to repeated radiation exposure.…”

“…Liquid biopsy provides a non- or minimally-invasive approach to the diagnostic work-up, risk stratification, and monitoring of patients who are suspected of having or are on treatment for FTC [ 212 ]. Liquid biopsies sample blood, saliva, or urine to look for circulating tumor cells, cell-free DNA, or extracellular vesicles (exosomes) that are released from the tumor [ 199 , 213 , 214 ]. Liquid biopsy is useful for differentiating FA from FTC, assessing the TME, early identification of metastases, and a de-differentiated FTC [ 163 , 199 , 212 , 215 , 216 ].…”

“…Nonetheless, mishaps in the detection of alternative biomarkers, insufficient tissue obtention, or incompatibility with long-term monitoring, among other limitations still exist ( 5 ). Compared with solid biopsy, LB is a more comprehensive diagnostic test that uses blood, urine ( 67 ), saliva, and other biological fluids ( 68 , 69 ). After the sampling circulating tumor nucleic acids and cells are extracted and further analyzed ( 68 , 70 ).…”
