Street foods refer to the ready-to-eat foods and beverages prepared or sold by vendors or hawkers especially in the streets or hawker centers. Though food-related items are often culture-specific, fewer have discussed the cultural representation behind the translation of street food. This paper aims to identify the prevailing translation techniques used in translating Chinese street food names and to examine how culture is represented through these translation techniques. Penang is selected as the research setting in this qualitative case study. Three types of food -rice dishes, noodle dishes and other staple foods such as dumplings, rice porridge and dim sum are collected. The sample size is 405 street food names in pair of English translation versions. The taxonomy of translation techniques is based on Marco's (2019) translation techniques on food-related items. The results revealed a sourceoriented tendency. It is found that literal translation and transliteration with source linguistic structure, dialect pronunciation and Chinese pinyin preserve source culture. The techniques neutralization and amplification clarify the ingredients, cooking methods of the food, representing a respect to Malaysian local culture. The techniques omission and cultural adaptation bring the food more familiar to English culture, representing the hospitality to the consumers.

A Corpus-Based Study on the Spanish Translation of 道 (dao) in The Analects

This article has chosen seven Spanish translations of The Analects to conduct comparative research focusing on one culture-specific item, 道 (dao). Subscribed to a descriptive approach based mainly on norms postulated by Toury and Equivalence by Nida, it endeavors to answer the following research questions: 1) What are the main strategies in its translation? 2) What are the possible motivators of translation similarities and differences? This research combines quantitative and qualitative analysis methods based on corpus building. Corpus-based, this study describes the translation of 道 in Classical Chinese and its translation equivalence into Spanish. The findings demonstrated that various strategies and words are used to translate 道. When it functions as a verb, the literal translation is used, and different verbs are employed to express the meaning given the context. Moreover, decisions on verb tense, sentence structure, and grammatical subject also seem to vary significantly across translators. When 道 is used as a noun, translators show different preferences for word choices. Instances for both dynamic and formal equivalence have been observed, pointing out that these two concepts should not be analyzed in isolation, as they stand in a dynamic relationship. Translators also make adaptations to reach adequacy and acceptability in translation. Detailed results are discussed in light of these theories, and this study views translation as a socio, linguistic, cultural, and translator-based activity.

Translatorial habitus is a key term incorporated Bourdieusian sociological concept of habitus and Translation Studies’ translation norms. In light of Bourdieu’s theoretical model of sociology, this study sought to address the translatorial behaviour of the Iranian translators of English romance novels in terms of the translation strategies of Culture-Specific Items (CSIs) before and after the Cultural Revolution of 1980 in Iran. 4282 sentences containing CSIs were obtained from Rebecca, Sense and Sensibility, the Great Gatsby, and their two Persian translations. Based on how each CSI was translated, they were grouped under one of Liang's proposed categorization. The frequency and percentages of each procedure were calculated using SPSS software. Moreover, the results were cross-checked with a qualitative analysis of some archived interviews printed in Motarjem [the translator] journal, newspapers, and WebPages. The evidence from this study suggests that there was a clear foreignizing trend among Iranian translators of the English romance novels when translating CSIs not only in the Pre-Cultural Revolution era but also in the Post-Cultural Revolution era. Also, a significant difference between various strategies utilized in the two eras was detected.
