Transport Processes of Seafloor Sediment From the Chukchi Shelf to the Western Arctic Basin

Abstract: The processes of seafloor sediment transport from the Chukchi shelf to the western Arctic basin were investigated using a pan‐Arctic sea ice‐ocean model and sediment‐trap measurements at four mooring stations: North of Barrow Canyon, North of Hanna Canyon, Northwind Abyssal Plain, and Chukchi Abyssal Plain. The available sediment‐trap data verified that the sinking flux of lithogenic material (LM) originally resuspended from the seafloor for 2010–2020 was simulated reasonably well in the four mooring areas. “…Thus, we can use Equation with estimated values of Az ${A}_{z}$ and q0 ${q}_{0}$ and H $H$ = (40, 50, 60) m to gain insight into the structure of the BBL at the mooring sites. Our data do not allow a quantitative estimate of Az ${A}_{z}$, so for simplicity we adopt a constant Az ${A}_{z}$ = 0.5 × $\times $ 10 −4 m 2 s −1 guided by the model configuration using 10 −4 m 2 s −1 for studying the circulation on the Chukchi Sea shelf (Spall, 2007; Watanabe et al., 2017, 2022). We use q0 ${q}_{0}$ = 5 cm s −1 , which is a typical value of the mean flow (e.g., F20).…”

“…Sea ice is another candidate for substantial MP accumulation because it incorporates MPs from the surrounding water during its formation. The northern sea-ice areas of the Chukchi and Beaufort Seas (Chukchi Borderland and Canada Basin) are downstream regions of Pacific-origin water (Watanabe et al, 2022). Because the Beaufort Sea is covered by sea ice during non-summer months, MPs might accumulate in the sea ice in this area, as sea-ice production exceeds sea-ice melting.…”
