“…However, “the immigrant paradox” is a phenomenon in which acculturation is associated with a decrease in physical and mental health (Alegría et al, 2008; Bacio et al, 2013; Marks et al, 2014), which may be caused by the deterioration of protective Latinx cultural values, the uptake of less healthy American behaviors, the stress of acculturation, and the increase in instances of discrimination (Fox et al, 2018; Gonzales et al, 2006). Relevant to this study, it has been shown that a specific Latinx cultural value, familism, is protective against mental illness and positively impacts parenting and family functioning (Dixon De Silva et al, 2020; Valdivieso-Mora et al, 2016). Since the youth in this study had clinical levels of PTSD symptoms, the cultural value of familism may have been important in protecting against poor school functioning.…”

“…Given existing literature that demonstrates that familism plays a positive role overall in adolescent adjustment (Dixon De Silva et al, 2020; García Coll et al, 1996), it was expected that familism would serve as a protective factor for the relationship between food insecurity, role overload, and the experience of depressive symptoms. The findings partially supported this hypothesis such that familism did not significantly moderate the independent relationships of food insecurity and role overload with depressive symptoms, but the three-way interaction was significant.…”

“…In addition, this sample consisted of youth living in rural farmworker communities in the Southeastern United States. The experiences of minority youth living in rural contexts may differ from those growing up in urban contexts as they face other challenges associated with living in isolated communities (Dixon De Silva et al, 2020). Future research should test the generalizability of the findings in this study with Latinx groups from different nationalities, ethnicities, and those living in urban contexts to examine if the results of this study are consistent.…”

“…In a recent study on adults, it was stated that apart from the variables of gender and age, variables such as injury in the earthquake and severe damage to the house in the earthquake have an effect on PTSD and PTG (Y. Zhou et al, 2020). Similarly, in studies examining adolescents, it was concluded that many factors such as the degree of trauma, damage caused by trauma, loss of family members play an important role (Dixon De Silva et al, 2020; Nicolson & Ponnamperuma, 2019; Xu et al, 2018). In addition, when looking at the descriptive analysis of the studies included in this review, it was observed that the samples consisted of adolescents living the earthquake, injured in earthquake, trapped in earthquake, seeing friends injured, house destroyed, or suffered severe damages.…”
