Travel-Related Lifestyle Profiles Of Older Women

Abstract: The lifestyle profiles of elderly travelers apparently has not been well researched. This study of 534 older women is an attempt to address this issue. The results suggest three distinct travel-related lifestyle profiles, distinct differences between some of the age groups, and managerially useful media preference pattern differences.

“…By analysing the previous studies on senior travel, the authors encountered different definitions of a senior traveller proposed by different authors: (1) 50 years old and above (Hawes, 1988;Blazey, 1992;Milman, 1998), (2) 55 years old and over (Lieux, Weaver, & McCleary, 1994;Shoemaker 2000), and (3) 60 years and older (Capella & Greco, 1987). For the purpose of this study, the authors investigated people aged 55 and older, who are labelled in the scientific literature as the senior market (Shoemaker, 1989), the mature market (Lazer, 1985), or the silver market (Branchik, 2010).…”

“…The studies analysed in this paper have been published over a period of about 25 years, going from 1988 (Hawes 1988) to 2014 (Chen and Shoemaker 2014;Ward 2014), to still forthcoming ones (Woo et al 2015). Seniors of various nationalities (USA, Europe, Asia and Australia) have been interviewed in the studies, either while travelling or on the basis of preliminary questions on their travelling experience, or, as in several cases, without any screening procedure rather than the sole age.…”

“…Thus, it is possible, for instance, to be an "adventure-seeking" tourist both at the age of 20 and at the age of 50. Although it is of course possible to focus on the specific lifestyle clusters encountered in a particular age group, such as seniors (Hawes, 1993;Lee & Tideswell, 2005;Littrell et al, 2004;Oates, Schufeldt, & Vaught, 1996), this focussed approach does not easily allow for a comparison between age groups, and thus teaches us relatively little about senior versus non-senior travel and tourism behaviours.…”
