Treatment Modalities of Obesity

Abstract: The prevalence of obesity is increasing in both developed and developing countries, with rates reaching ϳ10 -35% among adults in the Euro-American region. Obesity is associated with increased risks of cardiovascular diseases, type 2 diabetes, arthritis, and some type of cancers. Obesity significantly affects the quality of life and reduces the average life expectancy. The effective treatment of obesity should address both the medical and the social burden of this disease. Obesity needs to be treated within the… Show more

“…Obese patients, especially those with abdominal obesity due to visceral adipose tissue accumulation, run a higher risk of impaired glucose tolerance, which frequently evolves into insulin resistance (2). Obesity and insulin resistance are frequently associated with hypertension, proatherogenic dyslipidemia, chronic inflammation, a prothrombotic state, and recently also fatty liver (3), conditions that together make up what is known as metabolic syndrome and lead to an increased risk of developing cardiovascular disease (CVD) 1 and type 2 diabetes (4). Conversely, some dietary patterns and specific food components have been associated with a lower prevalence of obesity, type 2 diabetes, and CVD.…”

“…An increase in high calorie diets and a sedentary lifestyle are considered the key factors in explaining the epidemic rise in obesity in developed countries (1). Obese patients, especially those with abdominal obesity due to visceral adipose tissue accumulation, run a higher risk of impaired glucose tolerance, which frequently evolves into insulin resistance (2).…”

“…RM is the most common tool for weight reduction in obese individuals [171]. Even moderate weight loss of about 10% or less has been shown to contribute to several health benefits including improved metabolic parameters, reduced blood pressure, and increased longevity [ Adipose tissue is an endocrine organ with a large and biologically active secretome [180] [181] and fat tissue in obese individuals is characterized by increased expression and / or secretion of several pro-inflammatory cytokines.…”
