Treatment of Atrial Fibrillation in the Horse with Intravenous Dihydroquinidine Gluconate

Abstract: Summary The treatment of atrial fibrillation in two show jumpers is compared. The first horse received 1005 g quinidine sulphate by stomach tube and the second horse, a very similar case, received one dose of 10 g of dihydroquinidine gluconate intravenously and both were converted to a normal sinus rhythm. The possible advantages of the intravenous administration of a defibrillating drug are discussed. Résumé Les traitements de la fibrillation auriculaire, chez deux chevaux de concours hippique, sont comparés.… Show more

“…In cases of sustained atrial fibrillation, conversion to normal sinus rhythm (cardioversion) is required for the horse to regain athletic performance 2,3 . Pharmacologic cardioversion, primarily with quinidine, has been practiced in horses for over 4 decades, 2–10 with efficacy approaching 85–90% 2,3,7,10 . However, quinidine is associated with frequent adverse effects ranging in severity from benign to fatal, 2,3,7,10 which has encouraged investigators to pursue alternatives to quinidine therapy to achieve cardioversion.…”
