“…Currently there are 128 public wastewater treatment plants that can process 700 million cubic metres of sewage per year (National Office for Sewage of Algeria 2012). Yet the amount of treated sewage is very far from the real quantity discharged by the 37 million inhabitants of today's Algeria (for coverage of sewerage network in the order of 85%, only 20% of collected wastewater is treated in Algeria (Bendida et al, 2013). Consequently, on-site domestic wastewater treatment by sand filters appears to be a very interesting complementary aid to public sanitation in rural areas in terms of limiting pollution of surface water reserves and preventing groundwater pollution.…”
