“…This did not seem to be due to underdiagnosis because the two groups had similar numbers of women with undiagnosed hypertension at admission in labour. Reduction in transient hypertension was expected in general practitioner and midwife care because hospital visits may cause “white coat hypertension.”22 23 The mediating effect of psychosocial factors on diastolic blood pressure has been observed in obstetric studies,24 and a significant reduction in diastolic blood pressure was observed in a randomised controlled trial of companionship during labour 25. However, the result in the general practitioner and midwife group of a reduction in pre-eclampsia (hitherto thought to result from biological factors such as placentation26) is difficult to explain.…”

“…Physical activity in general and fitness training could be especially useful in women with no contraindications since both are significantly associated with a reduced blood pressure, help to control weight gain, and also improve psychological well-being (Warburton et al 2006). Other promising interventions that are recommended for pregnant women to help reduce blood pressure and improve psychological well-being could be relaxation training (Little et al 1984), yoga (Beddoe et al 2009), and mindfulness-based interventions (Dunn et al 2012). Future studies are required to ascertain if such interventions may help these women to reduce their risk of hypertension and to cope with physical and psychological challenges that are associated with pregnancy.…”

“…Physiological feedback creates an external loop by which a subject can monitor one or more of one's physiological states and then maintain human organism through his behaviors or adjustments [20]. Numerous clinical reports claimed better results applying physiological feedback in the treatment of hypertension [3,18], cardiac arrhythmia [29], migraine headache [4,23], tension headache [5], anxiety Downloaded by [Northeastern University] at 09:20 03 November 2014 Approaches disorders [12,13], peptic ulcer [30], muscle relaxation [6], asthma [14], incontinence, and elimination of subvocal reading [19]. There are grossly acceptances that physiological feedback training is most effective when combined with audio relaxation and visualization techniques [8,15,22,26].…”
