The use of RF/microwaves in medicine has increased dramatically over the last ten years. RF and microwave therapies for the treatment of cancer in humans are well documented, and are presently used in many cancer centers. RF treatment for supra ventricular arrhythmias, and more recently for the treatment of ventricular tachycardia, are currently employed by major hospitals. RF/microwave are also used in human subjects for the treatment of benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH). In the last few years, several otolaryngological centers have been utilizing RF to treat upper airway obstruction and to alleviate sleep apnea. Many centers also utilize RF for the treatment of gastro-esophageal disease (GERD), for pain management, and for endometrial ablation. Balloon microwave catheters for ablating solid tumors, then forming cavities in those tumors for the local delivery of therapeutic agents, are currently being investigated. New modalities are being studied, such as RF/microwave for the enhancement of drug absorption and microwave septic wound treatment, microwave imaging for the detection of breast cancer, epidemiological studies on the effects of rats' exposure to microwave, as well as tissue regeneration using electromagnetic fields. In addition, technology is presently being developed that allows for permanent implantation of microwave wireless sensors in humans. A permanently implantable intra-cranial pressure monitor is one such application of the latter technology. Many more areas of research are currently being investigated, a partial list of which is summarized here. This paper is a synopsis of a Plenary presentation given at IRMMW-THz 2008, Sept. 16, 2008 CA, USA and is representative of the conference theme, "THz for Life" which highlights cross-over applications from physics and engineering into biology and medicine. Although it is not specifically targeted at short wavelength RF it introduces therapies that may ultimately benefit from infrared and THz techniques and therefore is included in this special conference edition of JIMT (voc. ed.).

This is the fourth article in our continuing series of biographical pieces with a technical lean. The subject of this paper is Professor Arye Rosen, who -while employed full time at RCA Sarnoff Research Laboratory as an engineer and working on the side more-or-less as a "hobby" -pioneered the use of microwave angioplasty and ablation techniques in cardiology, and later influenced the use of microwaves in the treatment of benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH). Dr. Rosen's life story is as varied and interesting as his career path, and his contributions both to traditional microwave devices as well as microwaves in medicine will definitely inspire those of you who feel like they are pulled in more than one direction professionally. In Dr. Rosen's case, he did "have it all," but he worked very hard to make it happen and he took lots of chances …as you will hear! Evolution of microwave irradiation and its application in green chemistry and biosciences

Microwave-assisted organic reactions have been applied as an effective technique in organic synthesis. Microwave irradiation often leads to shorter reaction times, increased yields, easier workup, matches with green chemistry protocols, and can enhance the region and stereo selectivity of reactions. In fact, the high usefulness of microwave-assisted synthesis encouraged us to increase the efficiency of several organic transformations and synthesis. High-speed microwave-assisted chemistry has attracted a considerable amount of attention in recent years and has been applied successfully in various fields of synthetic organic chemistry, proteins, peptides, drug discovery, and green chemistry. The various roles of microwaveassisted organic chemistry in green and sustainable chemistry are discussed, beginning with the strategies, technologies, and methods that were employed routinely at the time of the first reports of microwave applications. Microwave processing has several advantages over conventional sintering/heating, such as the reduction in cycle time, energy efficiency, eco-friendliness, and providing finer microstructures, leading to improved mechanical properties. Herein, we also describe the evolution of the microwave and some early applications of microwave assistance in the biomolecular sciences and treatment of solid malignant tumors.
