Treatment withRhizoma DioscoreaeExtract Has Protective Effect on Osteopenia in Ovariectomized Rats

Abstract: The aims of this study were to evaluate the osteoprotective effect of aqueous extract from Rhizoma Dioscoreae (RDE) on rats with ovariectomy- (OVX-) induced osteopenia. Our results show that RDE could inhibit bone loss of OVX rats after a 12-week treatment. The microarray analysis showed that 68 genes were upregulated and that 100 genes were downregulated in femurs of the RDE group rats compared to those in the OVX group. The Ingenuity Pathway Analysis (IPA) showed that several downregulated genes had the pote… Show more

“…MAP2K6 is a direct and specific activator of all p38 MAPK (p38 mitogen‐activated protein kinase) isoforms, and the p38 MAPK signalling pathway plays an important role in osteoclast differentiation (Zhang et al., ). Previous investigations also elucidated that MAP2K6 was associated with various economic traits in livestock, some of which are related to bone development.…”

“…Osteoporosis, which results from a disturbance in normal bone remodeling by increasing bone resorption relative to bone formation, is identified by a low bone mass and leads to a high risk of fractures (18). Osteoporosis is often an undiagnosed disease prior to the occurrence of fracture.…”

“…Diosgenin is a steroidal sapogenin of fenugreek (Trigonella foenum-graecum), different yams (Dioscorea spp., including D. villosa, D. spongiosa, D. esculenta, D. zingiberensis, D. opposita) and some other edible or medicinal plants, where it is present as glycosides (saponins) (Raju & Mehta, 2009;Patel et al, 2012;Chiang & Pan, 2013;Sato et al, 2014;Zhang et al, 2014b). Various health-promoting activities have been demonstrated for diosgenin, including anti-diabetic, anti-hyperlipidemic, cancer-chemopreventive, anti-inflammatory, immunomodulatory (Raju & Mehta, 2009;Jung et al, 2010;Uemura et al, 2010;Chen et al, 2011;Patel et al, 2012;Rajput & Mandal, 2012;Chiang & Pan, 2013;Sato et al, 2014).…”
