Trend of clinical vancomycin-resistant enterococci isolated in a regional Italian hospital from 2001 to 2018

Abstract: A retrospective study of the epidemiology of vancomycin-resistant enterococci (VRE) in a regional hospital of central Italy in 2001-2018 demonstrated an increased VRE prevalence since 2016. A total of 113 VRE isolates, 89 E. faecium (VREfm) and 24 E. faecalis (VREfs), were collected in the study period. All strains showed highlevel resistance to vancomycin; 107 also showed teicoplanin resistance. Altogether, 84 VREfm and 20 VREfs carried vanA, whereas 5 VREfm and 1 VREfs carried vanB. MLST analysis documented … Show more

“…Our results highlighted that vanB 2 -VREfm and nearly half of VSEfm analyzed were from the hospital-associated (HA) ST117/CC17 or CladeA1 [ 22 ]. These STs are frequently associated with nosocomial outbreaks in Europe [ 23 , 24 , 25 ] and have also been reported in Italian hospitals [ 26 ], along with the other HA-STs that were detected here (ST78, ST916, ST80, and ST780).…”

“…To our knowledge, this was also the first documented outbreak with this ST in Europe. In recent publications from the neighbouring countries Germany [ 27 - 29 ] and Italy [ 30 ], molecular characterisation of local vancomycin-resistant E. faecium isolates failed to detect this new clone.…”

“…All isolates were tested by PCR for the presence of vanA and vanB genes, the most common glycopeptide resistance genes, as previously described [ 26 ].…”
