Trends in esophageal adenocarcinoma incidence and mortality

Abstract: Background Over the past several decades, the incidence of esophageal adenocarcinoma (EAC) has rapidly increased. The purpose of this analysis was to examine temporal trends in EAC incidence and mortality within the US population and, in addition, to explore these trends within subgroups of the population. Methods The National Cancer Institute (NCI) Surveillance, Epidemiology and End Results (SEER 9) data were used to examine incidence and incidence-based (IB) mortality in EAC from 1975 to 2009. Secular tren… Show more

“…Risk factors associated with the development of BE include long-standing GERD, male gender, central obesity ( 3 ), and age over 50 years ( 4,5 ). Th e goal of a screening and surveillance program for BE is to identify individuals at risk for progression to esophageal adenocarcinoma (EAC), a malignancy that has been increasing in incidence since the 1970s ( 6,7 ).Th e purpose of this guideline is to review the defi nition and epidemiology of BE, available screening modalities for BE detection, rationale and methods for surveillance, and available treatment modalities including medical, endoscopic, and surgical techniques. In order to evaluate the level of evidence and strength of recommendations, we used the GRADE (Grading of Recommendations Assessment, Development and Evaluation) system ( 8 ).…”

“…And the declining incidence of gastric cancers may be associated with the decreasing prevalence of Helicobacter pylori infection (Brenner et al, 2009). However, the incidence of esophageal adenocarcinoma and the gastric cardiac cancer have been increasing in many western countries over the last 30 years (Hansson et al, 1993;Thrift et al, 2012;Hur et al, 2013).…”

“…The utility of this integrated serum glycoprotein biomarker pipeline is demonstrated using esophageal adenocarcinoma (EAC) with unmet clinical need for an in vitro diagnostic test. EAC is a lethal malignancy of the lower esophagus with very poor 5-year survival rate of less than 25% (26). EAC is becoming increasingly common and its incidence is associated with the prevalent precursor metaplastic condition Barrett's esophagus (BE), but with a low annual conversion rate of up to 1% (27).…”
