Trends in pediatric cardiovascular magnetic resonance imaging

Abstract: Cardiac magnetic resonance (CMR) imaging has significantly evolved over the last decade, becoming an integral part of the contemporary assessment of both congenital and acquired pediatric heart disease. Recent trends show that there is a growing interest in clinical applications and research in this field. An attempt to discuss the evolving technologies, techniques, and applications of CMR in pediatrics is not complete without understanding the current strengths of the modality. CMR complements readily availab… Show more

“…Similarly, invasive catheters can be pre-placed under X-ray guidance before transfer to MRI. Initially performed at 1.5T, this has been referred to as "MRI-augmented" catheterization [39]. This type of combined sequential CMR and invasive cardiac catheterization evaluation initiates the process of working together as an iCMR team increasing familiarity of all involved parties with both modalities.…”

“…In the 1990s, several papers published in Acta Radiologica reported the use of phase-contrast velocity mapping in different applications such as measurement of aqueductal CSF flow (125,126), blood flow in the superior sagittal sinus (127), renal arteries (128), and biventricular diastolic flow (129). As documented in Acta Radiologica, velocity encoded phase contrast imaging has become an important part of cardiac MRI in congenital heart disease (130,131), and the technique can also be used for estimation of vessel wall shear stress (132,133).…”
