Trends in solitary plasmacytoma, extramedullary plasmacytoma, and plasma cell myeloma incidence and myeloma mortality by racial‐ethnic group, United States 2003‐2016

Abstract: Plasma cell myeloma (also called multiple myeloma), solitary plasmacytoma, and extramedullary plasmacytoma are primarily diseases of the elderly. Evidence suggests an association between excess body weight and multiple myeloma. Few population-based studies have examined incidence and mortality of each site in one study. We analyzed incidence and death rates by site (solitary plasmacytoma, extramedullary plasmacytoma, and multiple myeloma) by gender, age, race/ethnicity, and ruralurban status among adult males … Show more

“…Solitary plasmacytomas arise from the plasma cells in the bone marrow while extramedullary plasmacytomas arise from the plasma cells of mucosal surfaces 4 . Both diseases are extremely uncommon, with an incidence of 0.45 and 0.09 per 100 000 individuals, respectively 5 . The median age of diagnosis for both conditions has been reported as 55 years old 3 .…”

“… 7 Although hematogenous metastatic spread occurs more frequently in the skin, liver, kidney, or central nervous system, in our patient the tumor was soft tissue located, which it is suggested to be linked to extension from a skeletal tumor. 8 Recent epidemiological studies 9 have shown a statistically significant increase of EMP involvement in the last decade, and this was due to an increase in detection rates. Modern imaging and immunohistochemical tumor characteristics were found to be responsible for this.…”
