Trends in STEM/STEAM Education and Students’ Perceptions in Japan

Abstract: This study aimed to examine the trends in grants for STEM/STEAM education in Japan as well as Japanese students’ perception of science learning and future careers. The grants were addressed through analysis of chronological trends, while student perceptions were reviewed through student questionnaires on Trends in International Mathematics and Science Study (TIMSS) 2011, 2015, and 2019. The results reflect ideas on not only STEM education, which is often treated in the context of workforce development and scie… Show more

“…The importance of studies in the literature that report the general situation of studies on STEM education, which many researchers have been working on and which has a significant impact on education systems, is of great importance. There are studies conducted in this context in the literature (Arshad, 2021;Irwanto et al, 2022;Li et al, 2020;Martín-Páez et al, 2019;Matsuura & Nakamura, 2021;Wan et al, 2021). These studies are mainly carried out as traditional and systematic reviews.…”

“…As STEAM education is an emergent educational model, there are several inconsistencies and lack of conceptual clarity concerning STEAM terminology, pedagogy, and research (Aguilera & Ortiz-Revilla, 2021;Colucci-Gray et al, 2017;Matsuura & Nakamura, 2021).…”

“…A global shift towards STEM education soon followed. Countries have since been implementing initiatives to encourage students' uptake of academic studies and careers in STEM areas (Matsuura & Nakamura, 2021). Academic institutions internationally have embraced the STEM approach, developing STEM‐focused programmes and related curricula, often supported by government funding (Ferrari, 2020; Sheffield et al, 2018).…”

“…Engineering also provides students with the skills to creatively apply the foundations of Science and Mathematics in the design of objects, systems, or the construction of manufacturing processes. Mathematics is a subject that aims to develop in students the ability to analyze, reason and communicate ideas effectively through calculating, explaining and constructing and proposing solutions to solve mathematical problems in specific situations (Bentley et al, 2022;Chacko et al, 2015;Kaleci & Korkmaz, 2018;Matsuura & Nakamura, 2021).…”
