Trends in the Incidence of Biopsy-Proven Glomerular Diseases in the Adult Population in Central Poland in the Years 1990-2010

Abstract: Background: There is a paucity of epidemiological data on biopsy-proven glomerulonephritis (GN) in Poland. The aim of this study was to assess the epidemiology of renal diseases based on histological diagnosis in the region of Central Poland over the last two decades. Methods: Retrospective analysis of the results of 746 consecutive native kidney biopsies performed in the Caucasian adults from 1990 to 2010 in a single tertiary nephrology center serving an area of Central Poland. Results: Primary GN was found i… Show more

“…The occurrence of FSGS in our center (16.3%) is comparable with the results of other Polish centers (17.3%) and the USA (17%), but higher than in studies from other European countries, such as Estonia (7.3%) or the Czech Republic (10.8%) [7,10,13,15]. The reasons for the different epidemiologic patterns in renal biopsy are not completely clear.…”

“…is less frequent in some American and Asian countries [4,17]. However, it should be noted that according to data from Central Poland the number of cases of IgAN diagnosed in kidney biopsy specimens increased systematically together with an increase of performing DIF and eventually reached 100% of MesGN diagnoses [10]. Therefore, MesGN is currently rarely diagnosed and hardly encountered in recent literature data.…”

“…In addition, data from local or limited national registries of renal biopsy have been reported from South Korea [10,11], Bahrain [12,13], Brazil [14], Romania [15], China [16], Finland [17], Serbia [18], Pakistan [19] and Belgium [20]. Finally, there are also reports that include epidemiological data only on glomerular diseases from Australia [21], Macedonia [22], France [23], USA [24], Iran [25], Germany [26], Lebanon [27], Peru [28] and Poland [29]. In this study we describe the frequency and clinicopathological correlations of biopsy-proven native renal diseases in Croatian adults observed over past 15 years.…”
