Trends in Vietnam`s Pork Supply and Structural Features of its Pig Sector

Abstract: Abstract:Pork is the single most important source of animal protein in Vietnam and its availability has a substantial impact on the well-being of the Vietnamese. Since 1996, the local supply and per capita availability of pork in Vietnam have increased substantially. The trends in and sources of this growth in supply are identified by analysing official statistics. Differences in regional supply of pork are also identified, as well as regional variations in pork yields. Vietnam's pork industry relies on many s… Show more

“…In any case, most live animals or meat production in a given sector in the countries we researched can still be attributed to smaller-scale operations [76, 92, 100, 120–122, 124–126, 128132]. However, the role of larger-scale operations is expanding [86, 103, 113, 126, 131–137].…”

However, the role of larger-scale operations is expanding [86, 103, 113, 126, 131–137]. In China, for example, large-scale pig farms raising 3,000 to 50,000 pigs per year were responsible for 16% of the country’s pigs by 2010, while medium-scale and small-scale farms raised 48% and 34%, respectively [103].…”

“…In Vietnam, the population of pigs is expected to increase to 35 million in 2020 driven by fast‐growing domestic demands for livestock meat products and plans to increase export . Small‐scale farms account for about 90% of pig production and pork supply in Vietnam . Pig diseases, mainly respiratory and diarrhoeal diseases, are common and controlled by both prophylactic and therapeutic antimicrobial use despite the fact that most frequently occurring diseases, such as porcine reproductive and respiratory syndrome (PRRS) and foot‐and‐mouth disease, are of viral origin .…”

“…Significantly, more S. suis patients have an occupation related to pigs [odds ratio (OR) 5·52] or a history of eating uncooked or undercooked pig products (OR 4·44) compared to the general population [6]. Small-scale household pig rearing is very common in many parts of Vietnam and accounts for the majority of pork production [7, 8], with slaughter and meat-processing activities typically occuring at unregulated facilities especially in the northern region [9].…”
