Trends of European research and development in district heating technologies

Abstract: There is a considerable diversity of district heating (DH) technologies, components and interaction in EU countries. The trends and developments of DH are investigated in this paper. Research of four areas related to DH systems and their interaction with: fossil fuels, renewable energy (RE) sources, energy efficiency of the systems and the impact on the environment and the human health are described in the following content. The key conclusion obtained from this review is that the DH development requires more … Show more

“…Comparing the number of articles concerning "Energy System," China (32) and the United States (65) have published far fewer papers than the EU (276). Regarding the keyword "Energy Policy," the results are similar: the EU (180) published more papers than the United States (70) and China (35). Also, with respect to "Energy Management," significant differences between regions can be detected.…”

“…Within the current European 5 targets on energy efficiency [1] and energy production from renewable sources [2], DH systems can play a major role through sustainable and efficient thermal energy production, within the Smart Thermal Grids concept framework [3,4,5,6]. 10 DH systems have a wide field of applications, ranging from large systems supplying heat to the major metropolis to small systems tailored on mountain villages or isolated communities.…”
