Trends on Science Education Research Topics in Education Journals

Abstract: This research aims to identify the trends in the field of science education, during the last decade. Generally, these trends are compatible with the developments in the field of science education, which mostly emphasize teaching practices and methods. Similar projects have been carried out during previous decades, focusing on research articles published in journals specializing in science education. Instead, the emphasis of this study is on journals that focus generally on the field of education research. The … Show more

“…One exception to this trend is what appears to be a slight increase in the number of papers in U.S.‐centric journals which, in the past decade, have focused on teacher practices, and this may be related to the traction gained by the introduction and adoption of the Next Generation Science Standards (NGSS), as U.S.‐based researchers try to determine how NGSS‐aligned practices are enacted and how to support their enactment. (See Karampelas, 2021. )…”

“…One exception to this trend is what appears to be a slight increase in the number of papers in U.S.-centric journals which, in the past decade, have focused on teacher practices, and this may be related to the traction gained by the introduction and adoption of the Next Generation Science Standards (NGSS), as U.S.-based researchers try to determine how NGSS-aligned practices are enacted and how to support their enactment. (See Karampelas, 2021. ) Across the past two decades, we not only see a shift in research focus, but also an increase in the diversity of theoretical frameworks used as lenses on research questions posed (e.g., poststructuralism, critical feminism), in the methodologies employed (e.g., participatory DBR), and in the nationality of authors.…”

“…The goal of this project is thus an attempt to understand more broadly the current state of the field's research by analyzing the qualitative research articles published in top-tier science education journals. Karampelas (2021) similarly sought to better understand trends in education research and reviewed a large number of articles (n=6,504) published over the ten-year period of 2010-2020. Whereas Chang et al (2010) focused on journals that emphasized science education, Karampelas' (2021) analysis looked at a range of topics in educational research articles published in four journals for evidence of attention given to science education research.…”
