Tresca Stress Simulation of Metal-on-Metal Total Hip Arthroplasty during Normal Walking Activity

Abstract: The selection of biomaterials for bearing in total hip arthroplasty is very important to avoid various risks of primary postoperative failure for patients. The current investigation attempts to analyze the Tresca stress of metal-on-metal bearings with three different materials, namely, cobalt chromium molybdenum (CoCrMo), stainless steel 316L (SS 316L), and titanium alloy (Ti6Al4V). We used computational simulations using a 2D axisymmetric finite element model to predict Tresca stresses under physiological con… Show more

“…The common classification of biomaterials consists of four distinct classes: polymers, composites, ceramics, and metals [ 7 ]. For the biomedical and pharmaceutical fields (tissue engineering, wound dressings, bioimaging, drug delivery systems, implants, biosensors, biomedical diagnoses, and treatment of various conditions) [ 10 , 11 , 12 ], the new projected materials should display similar biological and structural characteristics, such as the indigenous extracellular matrix [ 13 ]. The novel biomaterials should have the capacity to sustain their structural stability to assure cellular proliferation and the development of new skin tissues [ 14 ].…”

“…The hug machine, with an adjustable strength pressure or intensity, was developed from the hugging theory; this theory can be used to develop a portable device that helps mobilization in children with autism [ 23 ]. Moreover, it will bring beneficial effects to the development of the medical device in emerging countries, especially in Indonesia, that have problems with costs related to the procurement of medical devices for the purpose of meeting market needs [ 24 , 25 , 26 , 27 , 28 , 29 , 30 , 31 ]. Emotional and physiological arousal is regulated by the autonomic nervous system, which is principally sustained by parasympathetic- and sympathetic-balanced activities.…”

“…In the case of extreme cartilage degeneration, knee replacement has always been an option. Research related to the assessment of the performance of artificial joints with Tresca stress, for which the use of in silico analysis of materials for metal-on-metal total hip arthroplasty with Tresca stresses, using a 2D axisymmetric finite element prediction model, was successfully demonstrated by Ammarullah et al, 2021 [ 21 ]. In a similar study, Jamari et al, 2021, demonstrated the effect of surface texturing as dimples on the wear evolution of total hip arthroplasty [ 22 ].…”
