Tribological aspects of a strain wave gearing system with specific reference to its space application

Abstract: Strain wave gearing (SWG), also known as harmonic drive gear, has been used in many space applications. In 2003, a development of grease-lubricated-type SWG for space flight applications was begun. The life tests of the SWG exposed to vibration test and thermal vacuum test were performed in vacuum. The life test results showed that the in-vacuum operating life of the SWG was significantly short compared with the in-atmosphere life, which is normally corresponding to a rolling fatigue life of wave generator bea… Show more

“…In view of the above, studies concerning lubrication in harmonic drive gears concern: Research on properties of lubricants intended for strain wave gears. Special attention is deserved here to the studies concerning the lubrication of harmonic drive gears designed for operation in outer space [ 30 , 31 ]; The tear and wear of the transmissions and selected tribological aspects [ 32 , 33 ]. …”

“…Huang et al 10 established the calculation model of friction torque and heat capacity for flexible bearings and obtained the temperature distribution of the inner and outer ring and the rolling elements. Ueura and Kiyosawa 11 made a comprehensive study on the failure mode and failure mechanism between the outer ring of flexible bearing and the inner wall of flexspline. They established a mixed lubrication model with asperity contact model.…”

“…An accelerated life test of harmonic actuator was carried out in reference [7], and an accelerated life test of liquid lubrication in mechanical part of spacecraft was carried out in reference [8]. The lubrication performance of a strain wave transmission system in a space application was studied in [9,10]. The transmission errors of harmonic drive gears were studied in [11,12].…”
