Tribological Behavior of Titanium Alloy Treated by Nitriding and Surface Texturing Composite Technology

Abstract: This study experimentally investigated the effect of surface textures on the tribological mechanism of nitrided titanium alloy (Ti–6Al–4V). The titanium alloy samples were nitrided at various temperatures ranging from 750 to 950 °C for 10 h in a plasma nitriding furnace. Then, surface textures were fabricated on the polished titanium alloy and plasma nitrided samples by laser process system. The surface roughness, microhardness, and constitution of samples treated by single nitriding and samples treated by com… Show more

“…The polished samples were cleaned in an ultrasonic bath for 15 min with alcohol. For cross-sectional microstructural examinations, as-polished samples were etched (Kroll etch (2 mL HF, 4 mL HNO 3 , 92 mL H 2 O) [ 77 ]) for 5 s and were analysed using a scanning electron microscope (SEM) (Tescan Vega 2, Brno-Kohoutovice, Czechia). The effect of shot peening parameters on surface and subsurface hardness distribution depending on depth were measured (Zeiss micro Vickers hardness tester, Oberkochen, Germany) in HV 0.1 , 15 s, and five replicates.…”

“…Titanium and its oxides from macro to nano scale are widely used by different industries because of their high strength, corrosion resistant nature, bio compatibility, and cost effectiveness [12,13]. For example, titanium powder is used by the marine, aeronautical, chemical, paint, and machinery industries to prevent rust and improve strength without adding more weight to the structure [12,14]. Sunscreen lotion contains a high amount of titanium dioxide to protect the skin from UVB and UVA2 rays [14,15].…”

“…Sunscreen lotion contains a high amount of titanium dioxide to protect the skin from UVB and UVA2 rays [14,15]. However, titanium has a bad reputation in terms of sliding tribology, due to unstable friction and wear, and higher chances of seizing [12,13]. As per stability tests and microscopy findings, 36% of nano particles should be smaller than 100 nm for high dispersibility in the water [15].…”

“…The researcher indicated an improvement in the surface mechanical properties such as the micro-hardness and the wear resistance. The laser polishing of different metals has been investigated by several researchers in order to produce a better understanding of the effect of the input processing parameters and to relate them to the modified surface characteristics [34,35]. In order to fill the gap of information available for 316L stainless steel, this paper presents a study of the effect of laser polishing parameters of 316L stainless steel alloy on the resulting surface properties.…”
