Tribological characterisation of plant oil derived fatty acid esters of higher polyols: Comparative experimental study

Abstract: In this paper, we present the study on the synthesis, physico‐chemical, and tribological characterisation of selected plant‐derived fatty acids esters of higher polyols. We described here more effective method synthesis of desired esters with high yields and high selectivities. In our novel and improved synthesis protocol, we applied homogeneous Sn catalysts. Physico‐chemical characterisation and lubricating properties of synthesised esters have been determined and discussed. Our results showed that the synthe… Show more

“…A lubricating grease produced on the base of epoxy resin was used for the tests (grease A) and for comparison of lubricating greases based on high quality hydrotreated mineral oil (grease B) [19], based on refined vegetable oil (grease C) [20][21][22][23][24][25] and on the base of high-viscous synthetic oil (grease D) [26]. The information concerning the use of materials is included in Table 1.…”

“…The impurities generated from the use of acidic catalyst during the incomplete esterification process (such as unreacted raw materials) or catalyst residue could contaminate the produced lubricant (Papadaki et al, 2018). Nowicki et al (2019) acknowledged that homogeneous acid catalyst had disadvantages for instance, high corrosivity and difficult product recovery. As a result, a similar catalyst used in the food sector, Tin (II) bis(2-ethylhexanoate), which is neutral and noncorrosive, was selected for the investigation.…”

“…The produced TMPE exhibited the smallest WSD (0.64 mm), the greatest anti-seizure properties (3450 N), and outstanding thermal stability at 400 °C, according to studies on high TMP dimers. The most crucial aspect was that proper catalyst selection enables the manufacturing of high-quality products without the requirement for high vacuum distillation operations (Nowicki et al, 2019). Papadaki et al (2018) investigated the production of TMPE from a two-step bioprocess microbial oil and TMP.…”
