Tribological performance characterization of brake friction materials: What test? What coefficient of friction?

Abstract: This article describes and explains the tribological tests and methods for the evaluation of the performance of the brake friction materials. It starts by discussing the particularities of these materials and the variation of characterization tests, which can experimentally simulate many aspects of brake situation but with a large field of tribo-test, from standard to specific protocol. Examples of preparation, procedures, instrumentation, and analysis results for the tribological aspect testing ranging from t… Show more

“…The coefficient of friction remains constant and increases further till the initial temperature, this phenomenon is called as recovery of friction material. 13,[24][25][26][27][28][29][30] In this research work, fade and recovery behavior of the newly developed nonasbestos friction material is experimentally studied. It is accomplished through the experimental setting made on the set up shown in Figure 3.…”

“…12 Different types of testing methods have been developed and utilized, for analysis of tribological performance of friction lining materials. 13 These methods started with conventional method and reached to techniques which include advanced instrumentation. The pin on disc, pad on disc, ring on disc tester, etc.…”

“…69 To study the tribological properties of the lining composites, a pin on disc equipment as described in, 70 was utilized to determine the coefficient of friction and wear rate of different composites under varying contact loads and dry sliding speeds. As a mass inertia dynamometer, another instrument with a unique configuration was utilized, 71 taber abrasion tester, revetest scratch tester, 72 electronic universal testing machines, lab-scale dynamometer, brake inertia dynamometer, 73 chase-type friction test machine, 74 tribometer test rig, and universal testing machine as shown in Table 4.…”

“…Sürtünme değerlendirme tarama testi (FAST), sürtünme malzemesinin (etkililik, toparlanma, hız hassasiyeti ve aşınma özellikleri) taraması için bir kalite kontrol testi olarak kabul edilir [6]. Chase makinesi, bir hava basıncı sistemi ile tamburun iç çapına karşı yüklenen kare sürtünme malzemesine sahip dönen bir tamburdan oluşur.…”
