Triglycerides to high-density lipoprotein cholesterol ratio as a surrogate for nonalcoholic fatty liver disease: a cross-sectional study

Abstract: BackgroundTriglycerides (TG) to high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL-C) ratio (TG/HDL-C) has been recommended as a surrogate marker for insulin resistance. In the present study, we aimed to investigate the relationship between TG/HDL-C and NAFLD in an apparently healthy population.MethodsA total of 18,061 subjects who participated in a health checkup program were included. NAFLD was diagnosed by ultrasonography.ResultsThe prevalence rate of NAFLD was 24.8% in the whole population, and progressively increa… Show more

“…Increased triglycerides (TG) and decreased high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL-C) are associated with metabolic syndrome [17]. It is interesting to note that the NAFLD cohort had elevated triglycerides but no difference in HDL-C level.…”

“…There were no signi cant differences in age, sex, blood pressure, and heart rate between the two groups. Subjects in the MAFLD group had relatively higher TG levels and lower HDL-C levels, and thus higher TG/HDL-C ratios than the control group [14,15]. Moreover, ALT and GGT levels were relatively higher in the MAFLD group than the control group, revealing hepatocellular damage in MAFLD patients [2].…”

“…Meanwhile, they found the AUC of TG/HDL-C in women and men was 0.85 (0.84-0.86) and 0.79 (0.78-0.80), respectively. [15]. A perspective cohort study including 3374 Chinese adults investigated the association between nonHDL-C/HDL-C with NAFLD, with AUROC of 0.717 in women and 0.682 in men [28].…”

“…In animal experiments, high cholesterol diets and free cholesterol accumulation in hepatic stellate cells were toxic to livers of rats and mice [12][13][14]. However, the diagnostic ability based on a single lipid parameter was not enough [15]. Recent studies based on ratio, as such triglyceride to high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (TG/HDL-C) [15], total cholesterol to high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (TC/HDL-C) [16], and apolipoprotein B/AI (ApoB/A I) [17], explored the diagnostic value for NAFLD, and the AUC of TG/HDL-C is signi cantly higher than that based on a single lipid parameter.…”
